Pronunciation spelling of "situation". Who pronounces /s/ as /ʃ/, especially when it will sound like "shit"? Equinox ◑ 11:16, 14 October 2021 (UTC)

Sean Connery? Heh. But the few hits the term gets look like ety 2 rather than like they're representing the speech of a character who talks like Connery. Somebody with speech defect, somebody who by mishap sets for a postalveolar pronunciation too early. For the definition does not say “eye dialect”. After the dental in the (the situation) it is easy to get confused, of course. “Speech is a complex process that requires precise timing, nerve and muscle control” and it is counterproductive to accuse those affected of being somehow motivated by the proximity of a vulgarity. I "accused" nobody; get over yourself. And it's silly for us to include speech-defect spellings; no other dictionary would. A children's book of colours would not include the version that a colour-blind person sees! Equinox ◑ 05:07, 15 October 2021 (UTC)

Including this is equivalent to including another meaning of tennish (‘pronunciation spelling of tennis’), which strikes me as an odd thing to do, even if it is the punchline of a joke (“When does Shir Sean Connery like to play shport? Tennish!”). Overlordnat1 (talk) 08:25, 15 October 2021 (UTC)

No other dictionary would, but isn’t Wiktionary regularly? (Although I also dare doubt it should.) We apparently even include babbling. I can’t of course derive from the presence of some possibly overlooked entries the rule, therefore the hyperbole must suffice, but in as much as I have followed the very unimportant discussions on the pronunciation spellings on them, my impression is that every artic disorder of every word gets its entry if mocked three times and there is nothing to prevent it.

I was arguing this entry should not even be present if attested, “who pronounces this?” is always a pertinent question with pronunciation spellings, but if you do not follow the reasoning everyone will sillily include speech-defect spellings you don’t want!

It is silly (I respect you of course for not even considering the silly) but unfortunately you can expect Wiktionary editors to have exactly that. Fay Freak (talk) 08:44, 15 October 2021 (UTC)

After searching GoogleBooks, I’m actually leaning towards saying keep shituation (which seems to sometimes even mean ‘shit situation’ as well as a pronunciation spelling of situation). I even think if someone were to create a new meaning of tennish it would pass RFV (the joke even appears in one of the books there). Overlordnat1 (talk) 09:34, 15 October 2021 (UTC)

I don't think there's dispute (yet?) over ety 2, "shit situation", which seems attested and iff so is idiomatic like Shitcago or Winterpeg. It's ety 1, which has been RFVed, which I'm not seeing enough evidence of (the few uses of shituation I see seem to intend "shit situation"; if you see examples where a character shes other ses, that'd help resolve the RFV question and leave the RFD question). - -sche (discuss) 20:01, 15 October 2021 (UTC)

I doubt this is comprehensive, but I tried to think of as many categories of nonstandard spellings as I could, and came up with this. I think most of us would keep ones that have become words in their own right, like critter, and ones like Shitcago/Winterpeg and Amerikkka/Micro$oft that have distinct semantics, and very common mispronunciations like mischievious. For better or worse we voted to have repetitions like brrrrr, cuuute, waaater. And we delete rare misspellings like anxt and typos like bisprectal, increidbly, while we keep common misspellings like accomodation. Where do we draw the line relative to dialectal-pronunciation spellings like da, cah, fucka, year (for here), yeah (for year), or caricatures like eben or eber, ones representing non-native speech like ze or sank you, or speech defects like dwagon or shituation, or eye dialect like sed? - -sche (discuss) 08:25, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

I'd delete ety 1 because of the risk of a shlippery shlope.

On the other hand, ety 2 is well attested and even has adequate translations, e.g. Russian ситуёвина (situjóvina) (Blend of ситуация (situacija) +‎ хуёвина (xujóvina)). Panya kijivu (talk) 23:35, 19 October 2021 (UTC)
