Dutch "schijnbaar" is English "seeming(ly)", not "apparent(ly)"

I object to "schijnbaar" being translated as meaning "evident(ly)" and/or "manifestly". English "apparently" seems to be able to carry those meanings, and would therefore create confusion.

Dutch "schijnbaar" refers to something that seems to be the case which may or may not be actually the case: the look and the fact may differ, but it is unknown to the speaker/writer whether or not they differ. This is different from Dutch "blijkbaar" which refers to some that is clearly the case: the look and and the fact are definitely the same.

I suppose English "seeming" (adjective) and "seemingly" (adverb) are (more) accurate translations.Redav (talk) 11:10, 4 July 2022 (UTC)
