Oxford dictionary of surnames says 'Schelp' is also a middle-low German name - means 'reed' and is based on occupation as 'one who works with or lives near reeds'. It lists the high German form of the name being 'schilf'. Many Schelp, Oberschelp, and Uberschelp originate from the city of Bielifeld, Germany.
