[edit]@Lingo Bingo Dingo So says the FEW and the sound-changes are suspiciously identical. The pronunciation with /ɑu̯/ is no obstacle either, if we keep in mind Old French /au̯/. Nicodene (talk) 23:15, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
- EWN says that in Middle Dutch it was initially directly borrowed from Latin, and subsequently influenced by stages of French, but older references went with just French < Latin. [1]

It seems, then, that as the pronunciation of the word changed in French, the Dutch word followed suit, in some respects, due to ongoing contact with French. For the Middle Dutch salcijsken, I suppose the ending is a diminutive or such? If so that may be worth noting. Nicodene (talk) 19:55, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
