Searching for "rhinodons" only returns fictional sharks. Alternately "Rhinodon" is an (obsolete?) genus name. DTLHS (talk) 01:42, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
- Capitalized it also occurs as a synonym (misspelling?) of the genus name Rhincodon. --Lambiam 11:22, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
- Looking for etyma I only find ῥίνη (rhínē), which has, as a secondary meaning, a kind of shark with a raspy skin, perhaps the eponym of the genus Rhina, although others derive it from the root of ῥίς (rhís, “nose”) also seen in rhinoceros.
- According to this source, Rhincodon probably originated from a printer’s mistaken reading of Rhineodon. --Lambiam 08:36, 13 September 2019 (UTC)
- Etyfish is a good source, one to be mined. See taxa entries Rhinodon and Rhincodon. DCDuring (talk) 10:33, 13 September 2019 (UTC)
