Possible relation to Slavonic "рабъ" originally meaning "slave". In all the Balkan Slavic languages and Romanian the primary meaning of "slave" shifted to the form "rob"; a borrowing from a west slavic language. Typically the word "Рабъ" continues to exist as well, but in a metaphorical sense such as "the slave of God". Thus I believe Romanian likely had a had an older noun derived from this, Early Romanian sound changes should permit for Рабъ to turn into something like răbu or răba. After which the meaning would have shifted from "Slave" to "The one who struggles". Combine this with the Slavic suffix -da (action noun maker) this would render "răbda", meaning "endurance, patience". Which subsequently was turned into a verb to display the quality.
