as I understand it the term originally came from British soldiers overhearing the Irishmen impressed into the army talking about their money on pay day... a Gaelic term for money is mo cuidah which to the English sounded like "ma quida" and they just adopted it.
---== I have also heard and read that the ponytail or hair braid once worn by Chinese men (the 'queue' from the French for tail) can be referred to as a 'quid.' Anyone else aware of this usage??
