Pronunciation

[edit]

Is it also pronounced 'cue' in UK spelling? I heard from my teacher that the UK spelling (and thus in Commonwealth realms too) it's spelled 'cue-oo' (que-ue). Is this true? Bennylin 00:30, 1 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Yes, it is. Not only have I always heard it pronounced that way in British television, but the Cambridge Pronouncing Dictionary agrees as well. --EncycloPetey 00:52, 1 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for my double questions, but which one is true? 'cue' or 'cue-oo'? Bennylin 04:10, 21 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
In the US it is almost always pronounced "cue", but it is not used nearly as much as "line" with the same meaning. DCDuring TALK 17:21, 13 February 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'm British, and yes, it's pronounced exactly the same as "cue" here too. I've never heard anyone pronounce it as two syllables. 195.194.238.103 11:04, 6 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
Ditto. I suspect "cue-oo" was just intended to help you remember the spelling at school. Equinox 11:59, 4 July 2016 (UTC)Reply
But what did they mean by "UK spelling" anyway? Is there another spelling for this word in the US? Because "cue" is a totally different word, isn't it? Another possibility for "cue-oo" is that the teacher was referring to the fairly strong diphthongization of /uː/ in English English, which makes both "queue" and "cue" sound like [kjɨu̯] and the like. 178.4.151.28 22:56, 1 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

Queuing (AmE) vs queueing (BrE).
