Just a personal guess, I think the 'dog' in 'put on dog' refers to fox stoles. But did 1860s college kids manage fox stoles, or weren't they that expensive back then? (Gosh, wearing a dead dog around your neck is kind of errrm *tribal* isn't it?) ///////
