1. (In the modern United States) May support the Democratic or Republican Party (purple states, states that vote for Democratic or Republican Party in general, being red states in some given elections and blue states in other given elections).

Some people I know use "purple" to refer somewhat euphemistically to public displays of affection/ boy-girl relationships: boys are blue, girls are red, don't make purple. is this used elsewhere or worthy of mention here? 24.56.166.100

I don't know. I haven't seen it anywhere except in this circle of friends, but it didn't sound quite like something they invented. 24.56.166.100

Hm. I searched for a few forms and nothing pops up from Google Books. I found one mention of the whole phrase on Google Groups, on alt.newlywed in a thread called A thought about honesty...: "Boys are blue, and girls are red, so don't make purple!"
