To pull off (intran.) means to set a vehicle in motion as in As soon as the traffic light had turned green, he pulled off.
To pull off (tran.) means to stop a vehicle by the side of as in When John felt his eyelids getting heavy, he pulled off the road and had a nap.

- I've never heard 'pull off' used in the anon's first suggestion, but the second is quite common. It's similar in meaning to pull over. Jamesjiao → T ◊ C 05:29, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
