Is prophesy an actual word? I thought it was spelt "prophecy", yet I have seen it spelt as "prophesy", what's the difference? -- Guest 00:29, 25 August 2006 (UTC)

Prophecy is the noun. Prophesy is the verb. — User:Smjg (talk) 22:02, 12 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Pronunciation

[edit]

Who in the UK pronounces it /pɹɒfəsɪi/? Indeed, who in the UK knows any such phoneme sequence as /ɪi/ - or any trisyllabic word with no stressed syllable?

In my experience, the word is phonetically distinguished from prophecy by having an /aɪ/ sound at the end. Fixing to reflect this. — User:Smjg (talk) 22:12, 12 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

I'm British (south-east England) and always thought it was pronounced the same as the noun, but I see that Chambers agrees with what you've just said. Hmm, the number of times I've mispronounced it doesn't bear thinking about! Equinox 22:17, 12 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
