Programmed Random OCcurrence

[edit]

I was always taught, in regards to game design, that PROC was an acronym for Programmed Random OCcurrence (which makes sense as that is the definition of the word in the extrapolation of the abbreviation itself). This may be a definition being falsely attributed after the fact which is not that uncommon in these situations. It will need further investigation or verification.

I don't think so. A proc doesn't have to be random, does it? and why would you need to call something "programmed" when it's part of a program already. We don't talk about "programmed functions" or "programmed classes". Look at the old BASIC programming language and you will see terms like DEF PROC, END PROC, where it always means "procedure".
