i'd always thought the short form was a euphemism for the longer form, as doing this would not be a waste of time but would inflict great bodily harm on the participant. cites on https://www.quora.com/Where-does-the-phrase-go-pound-sand-come-from and implication that even in WW2 it was well known enough to have a euphemistic form (besides the omission of the patient). —Soap— 08:29, 2 May 2024 (UTC)
