After creating this entry, I have found an older usage in a blog in the United States dating back to 2011, so the origin of the phrase and its wider meaning outside Ireland are unclear. Citation from the blog by a man in Manhattan, Kansas: "I grew up a suburban, mainstream, polyester Protestant." It seems this man's family left Catholicism for Methodism, so perhaps "polyester Protestant" has the same meaning in the U.S., and may even have been coined there.
