@Canonicalization Is this even a borrowing? There are references to an Old French term (implying a Middle French intermediate) in several etymological dictionaries, though the form varies. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 12:22, 14 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Lingo Bingo Dingo: That's what the TLFi seems to be saying: I think it cites the OF form as an aside, not as the etymon. Have you checked the Dictionnaire historique de la langue française by Alain Rey? If not, I can do that later (I don't have it at hand right now; probably tomorrow). - @Canonicalization Yes, but he does date the forms with -v- to the late 14th century, which I guess is Middle French?
