scornfull pitty

[edit]

what on earth is scornfull pitty sounds like an impossibility to me--209.181.16.93 22:59, 5 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, that is odd! I've changed it to just "scorn", since sense 1 handles pity already. Equinox 18:47, 9 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

Incomplete

[edit]

A number of definitions are missing here. The etymology shows the discussion of how the Greek term went from meaning "capable of suffering" to simply "capable of feeling", and then skips over to Latin and French versions where it reverts to the earlier meaning, but the latter meaning is still valid in English. Though the negative-connotation version is the most common usage in modern parlance, the more neutral aspect, which is largely synonymous with "emotional" or "impassioned", remains correct and should be listed here, though someone better-versed than myself should be in charge of writing the precise definition. I would also suggest adding a final definition explicitly linking it to the Pathetic Fallacy. 73.94.201.63 18:41, 9 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
