Meaning of pansy

[edit]

The word ‘pansy’ was first used in the Middle English, from French ‘pansée’. According to Oxford Dictionary, it means ‘a cultivated variety of viola with brightly-coloured flowers.’ In South Africa, it means ‘a sand dollar with a purple marking on the shell that resembles a flower.’

From 1929, people used the word ‘Pansy’ as an effeminate of weak person or also a gay man as a term of abuse and disparagement. Also the second meaning in this word is considered to be taboo slang in the Oxford Dictionary. MarcoToa 0425 (talk) 01:38, 8 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Also it can be used as an adjective but it’s really uncommon today.
