Latin pāvōnem, using regular sound changes, ends up in păuni, which is reanalyzed as plural, hence the păun singular. Not being inherited is extremely unlikely because the elision of intervowel "v" is a mark of words inherited from Latin. Bogdan (talk) 19:44, 16 May 2021 (UTC)
