Now hear this

[edit]

I didn't know this was a Navy phrase until I saw the gloss on your addition just now. I first encountered it at university, where it would precede the announcement that the library was closing. Perhaps it has more general usage? Equinox 21:01, 26 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Perhaps so. It's worth searching the usual citation sources to see. (Otherwise, perhaps your university's library adopted the announcement from the Navy. (I'm assuming you didn't attend the Naval Academy.  :-) ))—msh210 21:04, 26 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Among the first twenty results at google books:"now hear this" announce|announcement, the relevant ones are by and large (all but one, I think) naval in context.—msh210 19:46, 4 March 2009 (UTC)Reply
