mindset

[edit]

The English noun entry currently has this: "4. The mindset of a society, culture, or group -- as in Homer's use in the third verse of the Odyssey. (Can we add an example for this sense?)" I'm skeptical of any claim that this is an actual English usage of the word. This is not really the sense of the word in Odyssey 1.3, where it doesn't carry the "of a group" meaning on its own -- that part of the meaning comes from earlier in the line: πολλῶν δ᾽ ἀνθρώπων ἴδεν ἄστεα. All it really means there is "disposition" or "nature." This already has an rfex tag (which produces the "Can we add an example..."), so I suspect I'm not the first person to think this definition is doubtful. I'm going to delete this sense. If someone can come up with an actual example of this sense, then it can go back in.--2603:8000:8900:6E00:CB1F:BE22:8DE2:115B 15:19, 19 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
