IMHO rather from 'Mag Zijn', which was probably pronounced 'mach sien'. That would also make it a literal equivalent of Maybe.

I agree. This also makes it equivalent to the German "mag sein", which is an often used standard phrase in modern German. https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/User:Houtebeen
