Both citations seem to be errors for melodrama and thus uncountable, not plural. Equinox ◑ 13:29, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
- If you gloss (deprecated template usage) melodramata in those quotations as "instances of melodrama", "melodramatic acts or displays", then they appear quite clearly to be grammatically correct plural uses. — Raifʻhār Doremítzwr ~ (U · T · C) ~ 13:37, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

- Then we are at an impasse. I agree that the 1984 use sounds a little awkward; however, I believe the plural interpretation is the most plausible way to account for both the given uses of (deprecated template usage) melodramata, since it is difficult to imagine how such an error might arise unintentionally. — Raifʻhār Doremítzwr ~ (U · T · C) ~ 13:45, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
