Both citations seem to be errors for melodrama and thus uncountable, not plural. Equinox 13:29, 8 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

If you gloss (deprecated template usage) melodramata in those quotations as "instances of melodrama", "melodramatic acts or displays", then they appear quite clearly to be grammatically correct plural uses. — Raifʻhār Doremítzwr ~ (U · T · C) ~ 13:37, 8 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
As a native English speaker I find it very hard in both cases to believe that that was the intent. Equinox 13:41, 8 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
Then we are at an impasse. I agree that the 1984 use sounds a little awkward; however, I believe the plural interpretation is the most plausible way to account for both the given uses of (deprecated template usage) melodramata, since it is difficult to imagine how such an error might arise unintentionally. — Raifʻhār Doremítzwr ~ (U · T · C) ~ 13:45, 8 July 2011 (UTC)Reply
