"melder" as a Spanish/Ladino term
[edit]"melder la ley" in Spanish/Ladino means, in the context of Mediaeval Europe, chavrusa,
and "miauder" is the term rendered in Zarphatit (Consult I. Loeb on the 1240 controversy). German cognate "melden" also exists in the Medieval Ashkenaz dialect (has it remained in use?).
As recently as 1886, E. Drumont in his infamous France juive uses the term (archaizing with "myauder"), it is quite possible that he was referencing indirectly the 1240 controversy, as his mention includes the accusation that Leviathan can be found in Heaven, which is to be found in Donin's claims against the Talmud.
Allegedly the term is related to melodiare, perhaps due to the cantillation of sacred texts.
