Here's the first appearance of the word "meeple" on the net. The word, as Alison mentions in this post, was first coined by her only days before.

- Are we certain we buy this etymology? I think I remember using the term for Carc meeples in my high school gaming group in either 1998, 1999 or 2000, and we didn't invent the term. 108.66.117.55 23:13, 30 March 2015 (UTC)
- It's been verified and is widely accepted as the origination in the board game community. Also, Carcassonne came out in 2000 (see http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/822/carcassonne). — This unsigned comment was added by DangerMouse~enwiktionary (talk • contribs).
I thought it meant miniature people. Make more sense.
- I second mini-people. That's the only way I've ever heard it explained.
I've removed the supposed etymology because it is unsourced, questionable (how would one person's game-night use have spread?) and earlier uses have been pointed to. - -sche (discuss) 18:03, 22 April 2019 (UTC)
There is a source for Alison Hansel coining the term in the discussion thread https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1306102/first-board-game-use-meeples . In particular see post https://boardgamegeek.com/article/18145161#18145161 . It appears the term spread quickly due to internet postings at that time, combined with influential role that the Massachusetts board game community had at that time.
