A perceived all encompassing definition for Measure

[edit]

Measure (Noun) A Unit of Count.

Measure (Verb) An Iterative Count employing a Unit of Count --Layman1 10:51, 23 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

A cup etc.

[edit]

I think a measure can also refer to a cup or spoon with a fixed (possibly specified) volume used for example when cooking? /84.238.115.151 11:18, 2 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Pronunciation

[edit]

I think I have heard the word pronounced like "mayzher" by people from the southern United States. Is that true? Any explanation for it? Eric Kvaalen (talk) 16:13, 1 January 2015 (UTC)Reply

I've heard this same pronunciation (meɪzhər) in the Kansas City area. 64.151.9.170 04:23, 31 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
I can find an old written example in Henry Baird's 1863 Gospel of St. Matthew, Translated Into Western English as spoken in Devonshire(!): Vur way wat jidgmint ye jidge, ye shil be jidgid: an way wat mayzhur ye meet, et shil be mayzhur'd ta yu agane.
Wikipedia suggests that in newer Southern US English, a vowel shift has caused words with /eɪ/ to go to → [ɛɪ], and words with /ɛ/ to come into the place /eɪ/ formerly occupied (→ [e(j)ə]). - -sche (discuss) 06:10, 31 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
