I'm not confident enough to change the page, I haven't used this site before, but I am almost certain that "drunkardly sentimental" is almost always part of the definition for maudlin. If someone sees fit... 123.51.101.245 01:20, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit]portrayals and statues of the Magdalene may have typically been weeping but that's not the origin of this meaning. The origin is the theatricals of [w:Magdelene College]], Cambridge, whose theatricals were always overacted in the extreme, with arch emotion and lampoon-style emotionality; that may be in the college's article which is why I've linked it.
- It doesn't sound very plausible- do you have any references? Chuck Entz (talk) 08:10, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
