The etymology section's description of the word 'marmite' coming from 'meow' is not true. There's no citation, and there is nothing in the (full) OED about it. — This unsigned comment was added by 137.73.88.101 (talk) at 23:07, 4 August 2009.

Please don't just write "This is not true!" on pages. We have (fairly simple) policies for dealing with disputed information. In this case I've added an RFE template so it should hopefully get some attention. Equinox 23:14, 4 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Forms and errors

[edit]

@J3133: Please note, that the quotes that I removed were precisely in the form appropriate to the article except for the spelling error of the lower case name. OTOH, they were precisely wrong for the lower case marmite article in that this refers (correctly at that) to the lower case common noun which is the POT, not the SUBSTANCE, which is what these quotes refer to. Please establish what the correct form is in this case; I for one would not be happy to edit the quotes. Nor would it be helpful to the user to omit such a common usage of a misspelling. Would it be better to add a separate entry for the misspelt eponym, just as "hoover" is in common use for a vacuum cleaner? JonRichfield (talk) 16:44, 28 November 2023 (UTC)Reply

@JonRichfield: We have quotations at both Hoover and hoover (the verb). I am not sure what is meant by “a separate entry”; there is already an entry here, at marmite, for the substance—removing quotations does not change that. I.e., these quotations are provided for the sense of marmite that is “(uncountable) Alternative letter-case form of Marmite.” J3133 (talk) 16:52, 28 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
I apologise for not noticing that the entry for the lowercase spelling of the proper noun had just been added. Ignore the rest of the exchange. JonRichfield (talk) 17:51, 28 November 2023 (UTC)Reply
