Attestation & Alt. Forms
[edit]Apparently only attested in Chaucer according to MED. OED also lacks non-Chaucer ME quotes. Did Chaucer coin it? Perhaps another editor will find something, but so far I've not turned anything up by googling.
Since Chaucer is the only user of the word, I hesitate to include the alternate spellings: they're not really "alternate forms" in their own rights. If anyone else wants to give it a go, MED and OED list forms as follows:
- markisesse, markysesse, mairkisesse, mayrkysesse, marquisesse, marquissesse, marques, marquisses, marquesse, marquiesse, mayrkysesse, marquysesse, marquesses. Winthrop23 (talk) 02:40, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
