Copyright definition

I removed the following definition, as it is from a publication after 1923 and hence still under copyright (see w:Public domain) and it is, in any event, just another nuance of the existing definition:

1. resolution; the adaptive resolution of evolving complexity and chaos in science, society, and perception into a dynamic system of controlled order. (paraphrased and expanded from the definition in the 1963 Reinhold Encyclopedia of Management, now out of print).

Objection to Removal

The copyrighted quote, from The Encyclopedia of Management, Carl Heyel, Editor, Reinhold Publishing Corporation, New York, Copyright 1963, is: Management is "the resolution of complexity and diversity into orderly patterns of control".

It is a broad and general, rather than a specialized definition. My submitted public domain Management definition, as a loosely-related but more "operative" variation of that above copyrighted clause, is now: "Management is the continuous resolution of the evolving complexity and diversity in science, society, and perception into an adaptive system of dynamic controlled order". A simplification of this would be: "Management is the action of continuously changing chaos into order". The verb "Manage" would have corresponding variants of these definitions. Another variant of this refers to the group of people, organization units, or organizations that are "managing" an endeavor.

If you examine the definition currently provided by Wiktionary, you'll note that it is taxonomically specialized rather general. To further quote the above Encyclopedia's Foreword, "Here is the danger, then, that confronts management: its specialties are proliferating to such an extent as to make it difficult for any single manager to know what management is all about. ... The anomaly in management today is that in an age of specialists, we face a growing dearth of generalists".

What I'm seeking from Wiktionary is a generalist hypernym definition of "Manage" and its Management/Manages/Manager variants, with a collection of specialization/hyponym definitions - a tree of definitions.

Management and Managing

OK on the copyright point. However, if the above definition is just a nuance of the current definition, then where is the definition of "managing" or "manage"? Roebuckr 20:58, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

If the above definition were reduced to a compact form, the verb sense of it would ideally be covered at "manage". The first and second definition there ("to direct or be in charge of (e.g., an organization)" and "to handle or control, to force") are the ones closest to that sense, although they could perhaps benefit from some editing to indicate that the word especially applies to directing (or controlling) complex scenarios. I have added two senses to management. Much of the deeper meaning should be at Wikipedia. We also already have entries for a few specific types on management. With our emerging, much looser standards for inclusion, we should indeed have entries for many types of management.

We would not normally have much at a participle like managing unless it was also a noun (one test for which is whether it forms a plural ("managings"). I will examine and edit manage. DCDuring TALK 00:18, 19 January 2009 (UTC)
