Is there any source for the Celtic origin? It would seem to me that this childish word simply has a tendency to approach the cardinal vowel [ä]. That's why it's "mom" [mɑm~mäm] in North America, "mum" [mɐm] in southern England, and "mam" [mam~mäm] in northern England. All dialects use the vowel closest to [ä] in their respective inventories.
