The word 'maiolica' was in use before the letter "j" entered the English alphabet. The spelling 'majolica' was adopted in English for tin-glazed earthenware and soon after 1851 came to be used also to describe colored lead glazes earthenware. The "j" was and still is pronounced as both long "i" as in 'mike', and hard "j" as in 'jack'.Davidmadelena (talk) 09:08, 5 September 2019 (UTC)
