Etimology

There is a conspicuous semblance to the English word mate, which also has similar meaning. Hungarian may have borrowed the word from an Indo-European language. -ka is a general diminutive suffix, which resonates well with the narrower meaning of a marital partner to be. Alas, I have no proof that the foreign word was available near Hungary at the right time, a few hundred years ago. English was too far.
