@Lingo Bingo Dingo: Reading George Sand's passage, I don't think she's really giving the lupeux avian traits.

Two men are walking, and as they hear a creature repeatedly saying ah ! ah !, one of them asks if it's a bird, an owl more specifically (compare the onomatopoeia for the hoot: houhou). But the other mocks him: "a bird, yeah right! [No,] it's the lupeux". At least that's how I interpret it. PUC – 21:04, 15 November 2020 (UTC)
