Im rather new to this, but beeing brave i deleted the translation as "to go out". Löschen always requres an active someone. Poetic or not, a fire simply stoping without external agens can not be descibed with this verb. Hth.

Well, you're not quite right. In older usage, löschen could be intransitive, then being a strong verb: Das Feuer lischt. (For which we now say: erlischt.) But this would have to be treated as a separate verb, not just a sense of the one we hve. I'm too lazy to make that edit right now :) It's indeed obsolete, you're right about that.
