"To function improperly"

Recently the sense "Not to work properly" was rewritten as "To function improperly." These mean different things — something that doesn't work at all is not working properly or functioning improperly. Was this change correct? Does (deprecated template usage) kick up only cover the case of something that functions, but improperly? (Despite its U.S. tag, it's not an idiom I'm familiar with.) —Ruakh_TALK 20:16, 27 December 2008 (UTC)

Not much in my personal experience either. I was bothered by the placement of "not" in the definition. Not sure the distinction would long survive in ordinary speech. AHD of Idioms says "malfunction or cause trouble or pain". "act up" seems to be a synonym. DCDuring Holiday Greetings! 20:48, 27 December 2008 (UTC)
