[edit]The official spelling, since this is a historical word, is "katalonan". Where'd you get the spelling "katulunan"? Mar vin kaiser (talk) 15:56, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Mar vin kaiser I'm sorry for not seeing this earlier as I was not tagged. Anyway, looking at historical documents written the Spanish era, it is dominantly spelled as catolonan.
- Some examples:
- Customs of the Tagalogs (October 21 1589) ,From the The Philippine Islands, 1493–1898, Volume VII - Juan de Plasencia writes the word as catolonan.
- Ferdinand Blumentritt's Diccionario Mitológico De Filipinas (1895)
- English translation is listed as "Katolon. Father Chirino calls the priests and priestesses of the Tagalogs: Catalan or Catolonan."
- Vocabulario de la lengua Pampanga en Romance (1860, by Diego Bergaño) lists catolonan under tulon.
- Vocabulario de la Lengua Tagala has the following entries:
- "BOSONGBOSONG. pp. Fray Francisco dice basong-basong. pp.Corona de oro que usaba la catolonan."
- "POPOC. pc. Antiguamente significaba un ensalmo de la Catolonan. ahora es celebrar el parto y nacimiento
- Sacerdotiza de sus idolos, catolonan."
- Although, there is this entry:
- CATALONAN. pp. Sacerdotisa.
- The word before CATALONAN is CATOHOR (katuhod), and after CATALONAN is CATONA (katuna). Since the dictionary is arranged alphabetically, this can be inferred as either (1) possibly a typo, or (2) possibly a variant (like kamusta/kumusta) but the original word is CATOLONAN.
- Jean-Paul Potet inclined for the latter at Ancient Beliefs and Customs of the Tagalogs (See p. 360). (https://books.google.com.ph/books?id=Ca5XDwAAQBAJ&printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&q&f=false) He listed katalunan as a doublet of katulunan (Tag. katalonan < Span. catalona < Tag. katulunan), of which katulunan is the original word from tulon.
- He also links katulunan with the Malay keturunan from root turun (possession) at his Tagalog Borrowings and Cognates. See turun here (https://prpm.dbp.gov.my/Cari1?keyword=turun). Its definition includes "kemasukan roh halus ke dlm tubuh" or "entry of spirits to the body." The UP Diksiyonaryong Filipino most likely made it katalonan from Vocabulario de la Lengua Tagala's CATALONAN entry.
- However, since we are talking about the "official" spelling (such as orthography prefered by KWF) and also due to its vast usage nowadays as "katalonan," "katulunan" should just be put as a variant of katalonan but the original word historically is katulunan. Thanks!
