indoctrination vs education
[edit]Completely lacks any notion of the essential differences between "indoctrination" on one hand and words like "education", "information" or "instruction". Also should mention that the word does have a negative connotation, as the process arguably describes one form of brainwashing. — This unsigned comment was added by 84.63.4.23 (talk).
historical evolution
[edit]Evidence of the evolution of the term:
- The 1901 pre-OED NED has only neutral meanings, "1. trans. To imbue with learning, to teach. b. To instruct in a subject, principle, etc, c. To imbue with a doctrine, idea, or opinion. d. To bring into a knowledge of something. 2. To teach, inculcate (a subject, etc.). rare." Indoctrination is defined as "Instruction; formal teaching."
- The 1933 OED has not updated this.
- The 2011 Concise Oxford English Dictionary, however, defines indoctrinate as "cause to accept a set of beliefs uncritically through repeated instruction", and labels "teach or instruct" "archaic".
