I added this phrase as it had two synonyms that are in Wiktionary - red-handed and in flagrante delicto, and the related idiom caught in the act, even though "in the act" could be said to be just the sum of its parts.

Also, Google reveals Results 1 - 10 of about 9,750,000 for "in the act" ,and still Results 1 - 10 of about 1,710,000 for "in the act" - "caught in the act".
