Australian source and meaning
[edit]Australian tradition is WWI Middle East (Egypt, Palestine) as the source from the Arabic.
Also, in Australia, imshi (preferred spelling, usually repeated as imshi imshi) means go faster, rather than go away, although if someone is going away, then imshi imshi means go away faster, often accompanied by hand waving to go away. Very informal language, but not quite slang. Slightly archaic. Your grandfather might say it.
In Raiders of the Lost Ark (clearing the sand off the top of the map room in Tanis), Sallah uses “imshi imshi” to mean go faster, not go away. Badja (talk) 07:59, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
