I wonder about the etymology. This is not at all the way hunde- usually behaves; it prepends to adjectives, intensifying their degree and emphasizing their undesirableness. Nudansk Ordbog says

af hund (dette er muligvis en hentydning til fiskens grådighed) + ældre nydansk stegle "noget spidst", nemlig de spidse finner
