Add topicThe Dutch translation of 'hereby' is not 'hierbij' (which means 'herewith'). This is a common mistake and is a so-called 'false friend'. Even though the formula 'I hereby pronounce you man and wife.' does start with 'hierbij' in Dutch, the meaning in Dutch is 'at this time' and not 'by these means'. I'm not sure if the similarity in the formula stems from an archaic use of the Dutch or English or perhaps even from a mistranslation, but the fact remains that it is not a correct translation. In any case, the correct translation would be 'hierdoor'[1].
