Question about sport sense

We say, in ice hockey, it's "a player who uses a hockey stick to attempt to strike an opponent's head". Green's Newspeak (1984) suggests that in ice hockey and (less often) other contact sports it is a player who tries to intimidate/remove the opposition's star players.
