Did the ancestor of "hat" (six) really mean "seven"? Qorilla 20:15, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

Zaicz says in his etymology dictionary that *kutte means ugyanaz, so I replaced seven with same. --Panda10 20:30, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

Sense: "User rights on a website"

• @Equinox I have never even seen it on wikis, but it seems like it might just be a trivial extension of sense #2 (a role or capacity). If so we should probably delete it. - TheDaveRoss 14:25, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

I just found this in IRC logs from 2017 [1]: "you should only need to op up the once / the shiny @ in front of your name signifies that (you can later deop if you don't want the hat)". (IRC is not a "Web site" though.) Equinox ◑ 16:03, 14 November 2018 (UTC)

So do we think that might be the origin: the "hat" is the physical @ symbol placed ("worn") on a name on IRC? I do now vaguely seem to recall hearing the same term used for the operator @ sign in a heavily IRC-based Java chat room I used at the end of the 1990s. Equinox ◑ 06:14, 4 December 2018 (UTC)

Hungarian synonyms

Is hatásos really a synonym of hat? According to both Wiktionary and arcanum, hatásos is purely an adjective, so it would seem that it can't be a synonym of hat, a verb. I'm not a native speaker, so I'd prefer not to edit this myself without confirmation, though. — This unsigned comment was added by Gephyra (talk • contribs) at 19:05, 19 December 2020 (UTC).

@Gephyra Compare these two sentences: 1) Az altató hatott. 2) Az altató hatásos volt. Meaning of both: The sleeping pill was effective. In that way, hatásos is a synonym of hat. I hope this helps. Panda10 (talk) 23:56, 19 December 2020 (UTC)
