It should be noted that this spelling is not pronounced the same as hara-kiri, either. Since it's an American corruption likely dating back to World War II, it is pronounced like the rhyming English words "hairy-carry."

No, that would only be the case if you spoke a Mary-marry-merry merging dialect. In other dialects in America, it is pronounced /hæɹiˈkæɹi/ (vowel of "hat", not "hare"). Tharthan (talk) 02:12, 26 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
