The "gridiron and dough boys"

John Camden Hotten's Slang Dictionary (1873) has this as slang for "the flag of the United States, in allusion to the stars and stripes" (glossed as "sea", i.e. naval slang). I see it mentioned in a couple of other books, but perhaps not actually used. Equinox ◑ 04:48, 11 May 2021 (UTC)
