SoP, used not just in whaling, but generally in maritime and other occupational contexts, = green ("inexperienced") + hand ("low-skilled manual laborer"). DCDuring (talk) 18:01, 18 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

It's an altenative form of greenhand (which is treated as the alt form) as shown by the Collins reference. I found quite a few references to greenhands/green hands in the offshore drilling industry. Maybe the definition needs revising, but per WT:COALMINE I would keep this. DonnanZ (talk) 20:16, 18 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Keep per WT:COALMINE. Binarystep (talk) 00:03, 19 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Keep. I completely agree with Binarystep. Kiwima (talk) 02:37, 22 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
I think COALMINE cinches it, but in any case this is a very long-established and well-used idiomatic form, so I think it would be wise to keep it. Redirecting to either green or hand would be unhelpful since they are both massively polysemous. Equinox 05:23, 23 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
Keep as above. —Al-Muqanna المقنع (talk) 20:20, 23 March 2023 (UTC)Reply
