[edit]is it really stressed on the second /o/? it seems a word like this would be so rarely spoken aloud that i'd think it'd default to the normal pronunciation method for such words, which would be to assume a name "Gorop" and therefore stress the first syllable. —Soap— 08:12, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- @Soap: It’s based on the pronunciation of “Goropius” which you can see at “w:Johannes Goropius Becanus”. It makes sense that this word should follow the pronunciation of the name. — Sgconlaw (talk) 11:43, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
- if the word were Goropian, I'd expect the pronunciation to follow, but -ism seems to behave as if it were a single syllable in English, perhaps because -ist is. I will try to find more examples of stress mismatch involving -ism, since I dont think this word is spoken out loud often enough for us to be able to rely on what we hear, and yet I really think that word-initial stress must be acceptable even if it's just one of two pronunciations. - @Soap: you may want to raise this matter for a broader discussion at the Tea Room. — Sgconlaw (talk) 14:15, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
