I am no expert but I think the french and english words are related : to glean, glaner...

La forme glener est attestée au XIIIe siècle. Issu du bas latin glenare (« glaner »), dérivé d’un radical gaulois *glenn-. — This comment was unsigned.

Before the advent of modern agriculture, women often had to glean.

Men did this work too! Depending on the area, different regulations applied: -- Large farms ordered "gleaning" for the farmhands and maidservants -- a second "gleaning" was only available to the poorer sections of the population or -- Gleaning was generally a right of the poor. This work was always done by men, women and children!
