Headword

[edit]

I suggest that the headword for this page be changed to "geócian" (to preserve, save) and a separate page be created for "geocian" (to plow/plough) per the Bosworth Toller dictionary: https://bosworthtoller.com/49102 Merteuil (talk) 00:46, 16 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Wiktionary's standardized spelling for Old English is a bit different than Bosworth-Toller's. We don't include diacritics in the link, so both pages should be at geocian, one with the headword ġēocian and one with the headword ġeocian. Also, BT's definition for geocian seems to be "to yoke"—are you referring to a different entry? Vergencescattered (talk) 01:07, 16 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
I've added the second definition to this page. Vergencescattered (talk) 01:09, 16 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
Good to know re the diacritics - thank you! I see you already added the other definition - I am currently translating something that uses that definition ("to yoke, join"), but I could not find it here on Wiktionary which has proved so helpful to me when it comes to translating OE passages (I think largely due to your efforts - thank you!). I had originally hoped to add it myself but then realized there might be differences in the entry systems. Thank you for the quick response/action and, again, for making this such a great resource for OE.

p.s. Sorry! I meant to write "to yoke" - the passage I am translating has someone yoking oxen to a plow/plough so I think I must have transferred the meaning in my mind - good catch! Merteuil (talk) 01:22, 16 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
No problem, I'm glad I could help! Vergencescattered (talk) 05:24, 16 December 2024 (UTC)Reply
